India - Pak
N-facilities
-
On January
1, 2011
following
a
two-decade
old
practice,
India and
Pakistan
exchanged
lists of
their
respective
nuclear
facilities
-
The
exchange
was done
under the
Agreement
on the
Prohibition
of Attack
against
Nuclear
Installations,
which was
signed on
December
31, 1988.
-
The
agreement
came into
force from
January
27, 1991,
and since
then the
two
countries
have been
exchanging
the lists
of their
nuclear
installations
on the
first day
of every
calendar
year.
-
The lists
are
exchanged
by the two
sides
through
diplomatic
channels
in New
Delhi and
Islamabad.
-
While
India
handed
over its
list to a
Pakistani
High
Commission
official
posted in
New Delhi,
Pakistan
gave its
list to an
Indian
official
in
Islamabad
simultaneously.
-
Both
countries
are
de-facto
nuclear-weapon
powers.
India
conducted
its first
nuclear
test in
1974,
followed
by five
more in
May 1998.
Pakistan
conducted
six
tit-for-tat
nuclear
tests in
1998.
-
The two
countries
have
refused to
sign the
nuclear
non-proliferation
treaty.
-
While
India
contends
that it is
discriminatory
in nature,
Pakistan
says it
won’t join
the treaty
until
India
accedes to
it.
