- Rajiv Kumar; he replaces Arvind Panagariya who stepped down from the post of vice chairman last week. Dr Rajiv Kumar is currently a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, a non-governmental think thank on public policy that is based out of New Delhi.
- Assam; The Centre has declared the entire Assam as a “disturbed” area under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, citing various violent activities by insurgent groups ULFA, NDFB and others. In another gazette notification, the ministry declared three districts of Arunachal Pradesh - Tirap, Changlang and Longding - besides areas falling under 16 police stations bordering Assam as “disturbed” area under the AFSPA for three more months.
- Goa; The Goa Legislative Assembly today passed a bill which reclassifies coconut as a `tree, ensuring legal protection for it. Goa Forward Party, a partner in the Manohar Parrikar-led government, had promised to reclassify coconut. The previous Laxmikant Parsekar-led government had changed classification of coconut tree to a `palm.However, the decision kicked up a controversy as green activists claimed that it would make it easy to cut down coconut trees indiscriminately in the coastal state as it would require no formal permission.The Assembly, on the last day of Monsoon session, passed the Goa, Daman and Diu (Preservation of) Trees Act, 1984 to regulate felling of coconut trees and reclassify it as tree.

- Ankur Mittal; Indian shooter Ankur Mittal clinched the individual as well as the team gold medal in men's double trap at the 7th Asian Shotgun Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan on Saturday. Mittal shot 71 in the six-man final to finish at the top of the podium.
- Beirut, Lebanon; - FIBA's Regional Office in Asia on Friday announced that the first-ever FIBA Asia Cup will take place in Lebanon’s capital of Beirut, while the maiden FIBA Women’s Asia Cup is to be staged in the Indian city of Bengaluru.
- Noted Bollywood lyricist-screenwriter and ad guru Prasoon Joshi on Friday replaced Pahlaj Nihalani as CBFC chairperson. Winner of two National Awards and three Filmfare Awards, Prasoon Joshi is also the CEO of McCann World group India and Chairman (Asia Pacific).
- Uttar Pradesh; The Uttar Pradesh Madrassa Shiksha Parishad, the state government body which governs madrassas, issued the letter, with a copy to all district minority welfare officials for compliance.
- Saturn; Cassini instruments will obtain data on the atmosphere close to the planet’s cloud tops, make detailed, high-resolution observations of Saturn’s auroras, temperature, and the vortexes at the planet’s poles. Its radar will peer deep into the atmosphere to reveal small-scale features as fine as 25 kilometres wide – nearly 100 times smaller than the spacecraft could observe prior to its final mission phase.
- ICICI; ICICI Bank has introduced a new product called instant credit cards that will allow select savings account customers of the Bank to get a virtual card that can be used for purchases even before the plastic card gets delivered. (The card) will empower our customers to instantly get the credit card online in a few steps and immediately start transacting on e-commerce sites to take advantage of offers. A customer can get a credit card instantly with a credit limit of upto Rs four lakh based on pre-checked credit bureau scores
