·         On August 22, 2008 Central Executive Committee of PPP formally nominated the Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari as its candidate for the coveted office of President of Pakistan.

·         The presidential election would be held on September 6, the Election Commission

·         The top office had fallen vacant consequent to resignation of Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

·         Members of the Senate, the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies constitute electoral college for the election.

·         On August 18, 2008 in Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf announced the decision to resign …. Decision seen as an under impeachment threat but brought to an end a tumultuous nine-year reign that thrived with US backing.

·         From Oct 7, 1998 when he became the chief of army staff to Oct 12, 1999 when he ousted the Nawaz Sharif government and now, almost nine years later, when he quit as Pakistan’s 12th president, Pervez Musharraf has played a key role in the country’s development

·         On August 21, 2008 Balochistan governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi resigned from his office and NWFP governor Owais Ghani also submitted his resignation following Pervez Musharraf decision to step down as Pakistan President but provincial chief minister Amir Haider Hoti said he wanted to retain him because of his rich experience.

·         October 7, 1998: Pervez Musharraf appointed as army chief by the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, superseding several senior officers.

·         May 1999: Kargil intrusion takes place. Sharif later orders Musharraf to withdraw Pakistani troops under US pressure.

·         October 12: Musharraf overthrows his mentor Sharif in a bloodless coup.

·         May 13, 2000: Supreme Court validates coup.

·         June 20, 2001: Musharraf appoints himself president, stays as army chief.

·         April 30, 2002: Musharraf wins controversial national referendum to continue as president for a five-year term.

·         December 14 and 25: Musharraf survives two assassination attempts plotted by Al-Qaida.

·         January 2004: Musharraf and the then PM of India, A. B. Vajpayee, agree to a peace dialogue.

·         December 30: Musharraf goes back on his pledge to step down as army chief. He secures support of parliament to stay on till 2007.

·         October 6, 2007: Parliament elects Musharraf as President for a fresh five-year term.

·         October 18: Former Pakistan premier and PPP leader Benazir Bhutto returns from exile.

·         November 3: Musharraf imposes state of emergency and suspends constitution. Judges of the supreme court, who were set to rule on the legality of his election, sacked.

·         November 25: Sharif returns from exile.

·         November 28: Under domestic and international pressure, Musharraf doffs uniform, becomes a civilian president.

·         December 15: State of emergency lifted.

·         December 27: Benazir Bhutto assassinated during an election rally.

·         February 18, 2008: Landmark general elections bring Musharraf opponents the PPP and the PML (N) of Nawaz Sharif to power.

·         August 7: Ruling coalition leaders announce plans to seek Musharraf’s impeachment in parliament.

·         August 18: Musharraf announces resignation
