Mediterranean
Summit
·
On July 13,
2008 French
President
Nicolas
Sarkozy
opened a
summit of 43
leaders in
Paris to
launch a new
union
between
Europe and
Mediterranean
rim nations.
·
The union
will tackle
such issues
as regional
unrest,
immigration
and
pollution.
·
Israeli and
Palestinian
leaders have
expressed
their
optimism
over the
chances for
Middle East
peace.
Mission
IAS’2009
·
At the
Mediterranean
Summit, more
than 40
nations
agreed to
help create
a zone free
of weapons
of mass
destruction
(WMD) in the
Middle East.
·
A final
declaration
from a
summit
launching
the Union
for the
Mediterranean
says the
members will
“pursue
a mutually
and
effectively
verifiable
Middle East
Zone free of
weapons of
mass
destruction.”
·
The
statement
says that
includes
nuclear,
chemical and
biological
weapons as
well as
their
delivery
systems.
·
The
Mediterranean
Sea is a
part of the
Atlantic
Ocean almost
completely
enclosed by
land: on the
north by
Europe, on
the south by
Africa, and
on the east
by Asia.
·
It covers an
approximate
area of 2.5
million km˛
(965 000
mi˛), but
its
connection
to the
Atlantic
(the Strait
of
Gibraltar)
is only 14
km (9 mi)
wide.
·
In
oceanography,
it is
sometimes
called
the
Eurafrican
Mediterranean
Sea or
the
European
Mediterranean
Sea, to
distinguish
it from
mediterranean
seas
elsewhere.
-
Twenty-one
modern
states
have a
coastline
on the
Mediterranean
Sea.
