party lost
its majority
in
parliament

Zanu-PF
party has
taken 94 of
the 207
contested
seats, while
opposition
parties have
won 105. One
seat has
gone to an
independent.

Opposition
MDC’s leader
Morgan
Tsvangirai
had won the
presidential
election.
·
Zimbabweans
voted on 29
March for
elections,
with
incumbent
Robert
Mugabe - in
power for 28
years -
seeking
another term
as
president. .
·
Under
Zimbabwean
law,
when several
candidates
contest the
presidency
the winning
candidate
must receive
more than
50% of the
vote,
otherwise a
second round
between the
two leading
candidates
must be held
within 21
days.
·
Some 5.9m
registered
voters were
also voting
to elect 210
MPs, 60
Senators and
about 1,600
local
council
officials.

President
Robert
Mugabe has
ruled
Zimbabwe
since 1980,
first as
prime
minister and
later as
executive
president.
·
He formed
the
governing
Zanu-PF in
1963 and led
a war
against the
white
minority
government
of Ian Smith
in the then
Southern
Rhodesia,
for which he
is still
admired by
his African
counterparts
and
supported by
Zimbabwe's
war
veterans.
