Milk with Vitamin A

·         On March 13, 2008 Congress parliament member Sachin Pilot submitted a private member’s bill to Lok Sabha to make it mandatory for all dairy firms in India to fortify milk with Vitamin A as India is home to 40 pe of the world malnourished children.

·         Pilot submitted a private member's bill to the Lok Sabha and sought amendment to the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act to include fortification of milk with Vitamin A.

·         Almost 46 percent of Indian children under the age of three suffer from malnutrition, according to the survey by the health ministry in conjunction with the United Nations Children's Education Fund (Unicef).

·         This figure is worse than that of the sub-Saharan countries.

·          If 35 percent of the children in sub-Saharan region suffer from malnutrition, in china the figure is only eight percent.

·         Ninety percent of the children get less than fifty percent of Vitamin A through food, while 80 percent of women get 50 percent of the vitamin

·         When milk is processed and the fat content is reduced, Vitamin A and D are removed with fat. "Therefore, toned and double toned milk are low in fat and also low in vitamin A"

·        A segment of nutrients are called vitamins because their being crucial for vitality. These nutrients are essential to a productive life

·        Vitamins, especially the B vitamins, play an important roles in producing cellular energy.  Their effect is felt predominantly in the energy producing process popularly known as Krebs cycle.

·        Vitamins B2 and B3, for example, supply the major building blocks for substances called flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD and FADH) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD and NADH). These are critical elements of producing energy in the Krebs cycle as well as a process called oxidative phosphorylation.

·        The fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E and K.

·        The water-soluble vitamins include vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and Vitamin C as well as Folic acid and Biotin.

·        Vitamin C is best known for its ability to combat colds and its function as an antioxidants
