On February
5, 2008
India
submitted
the
Kalka-Shimla
railway
route as
fresh
nomination
for
inscription
on World
Heritage
List under
“cultural
category”
for 2008.
Kalka-Shimla
Railway
nomination
has also
been
evaluated by
ICOMOS for
UNESCO
·
Termed as
the greatest
narrow gauge
engineering
feat in
India, the
Kalka-Shimla
rail track
was built to
connect the
summer
capital of
India in
1903 at an
altitude of
2,076 m.
·
The journey
offers a
panoramic
treat of
grandeur of
the
Himalayas
from
foothills of
Shivalik at
Kalka
through
stops like
Dharampur,
Solan,
Kandaghat,
Taradevi,
Barog,
Salogra,
Summerhill
and Shimla.
·
India
currently
has 27 World
Heritage
Sites, of
which 22 are
cultural and
five
natural.
·
The Red Fort,
which was
included
last year,
is most
recent
addition to
the list. If
inscribed,
Majuli will
be first
world
heritage
site in
India under
the
‘cultural
landscape’
category.
·
The
Kalka-Shimla
Railway
nomination
has also
been
evaluated by
ICOMOS for
UNESCO.
