dedicated to
the Nation
the first
state of the
art In Vitro
Fertilization
(IVF)
Research
Centre
established
at AIIMS.
·
Infertility
causes
breech in
the
continuity
of once
genetic
pedigree and
thus results
in
substantial
socio-medical
problem.
·
In 2004, it
was
estimated
that over
186 million
women
worldwide
experience
problems in
conceiving.
·
This figure
is
substantially
high over
previous
estimates,
suggesting a
global
increase in
prevalence
of
infertility.
·
In
India the
problem
affects
nearly 6-8%
of couples
in the
reproductive
age group.
·
Considering
the current
population
statistics
of India
this would
extrapolate
to a
humongous
burden to
the society.
·
Out of a
population
of 1000
million
Indians, an
estimated
25% (250
million
individuals)
are
conservatively
estimated to
be
attempting
parenthood
at any given
time; by
extrapolating
the WHO
estimate,
approximately
13 to 19
million
couples are
likely to be
infertile in
the country
at any given
time.
·
Infertility
is often
thought as a
female
concern, but
in fact in
nearly 10
-15 % of
cases it is
because of
male
problems
such as low
sperm
counts.
·
Conditions
affecting
women's
fertility
include
damage to
the
fallopian
tubes (30%),
ovulatory
problems (20
%),
endometriosis
(5%), and
uterine
pathology (2
%). In up to
30 % of
couples no
identifiable
reasons can
be accounted
for
infertility
the
so-called
unexplained
infertility.
·
Sometimes
there are
multiple
conditions
that account
for
infertility.
·
ART involves
the direct
manipulation
of human
oocytes,
sperms and
embryos
outside the
body to
establish
pregnancy,
literally
means
"fertilization
in glass"
hence the
famous name
"test tube
baby ".
