Crime in Indian trains

  • On June 3, 2006 AK Singh, Dy Inspector General for Crime at Indian Railways shared that a crime takes place inside trains or at railway premises every 30 minutes - a significant number of these crimes are taking place in UP, Bihar and Jharkhand
  • Worse, the first three months of 2006 witnessed an over 200 per cent increase in the number of rape cases inside Indian trains and railway premises.
  • Between January and March, 20 rapes and 38 cases of dacoity were reported to the railway police.
    • During the same period last year, six rapes and 21 cases of dacoity were registered

  • In all, the railway police registered about 2,700 crime cases in the first three months of 2006
  • India , with one of the world’s largest railway networks, has about 9,000 passenger trains running on the tracks every single day carrying more than 14 million passengers.
